Yeah us Type 1 Diabetics are a weird lot I admit, we get together and talk about needles and blood sugar and get excited when we discover nutrients in foods we didn’t know about before…what types of testers we own and how many times we draw blood from our fingers every day.
Not only do we talk about weird shit, we love to have electronic gadgets hanging off us or communicating with us at a subcutaneous level, but something we all do that you ‘normal’ people do, is eat food.
“Food glorious food, What wouldn’t we give for
That extra bit more
That’s all we live for
Why should we be fated to do
Nothing but brood on food
Food, Glourious food glororious fooooooood”
Karen Graffeo from bitter sweet diabetes has asked us to talk about a typical food day for a Type 1 Diabetic and what we eat for day 5 of #DBlogWeek.
So don’t be surprised to find that I eat what most healthy people eat.
I do practice the paleo lifestyle 90% of the time but one thing I am not willing to give up is coffee, I always have brew of black (no sugar) coffee when I get up, once the brain has booted up I will have either fruit, pancakes (Paleo), cooked breakfast consisting of no bread, a cooked tomato, mushrooms and spinach with good quality bacon and 2 poached eggs or I may just make a smoothie. The smoothie I tried during the week was pear, banana, chia seeds, coconut milk and cinnamon.
Mid Morning Snack
Usually a variety of nuts and or fruit
Left over dinners, or today I had a 250g porterhouse steak with mixed frozen vegies (heated up of course)
We eat a lot of chicken in my house, not sure why but always seems to be the case. I made a nice paleo chicken kiev, using coconut and almond flour for the coating, along with sweet potato mash and apple peacan brussel sprout salad (oh yeah that one is so good even the kids eat it!)
I tried authentic pad some time ago and fell in love, since starting paleo I have discovered a paleo version of pad thai which also tastes super awesome!
I don’t really eat dessert, not because of T1D but because I am not really a desert person. My wife does make some mean chocolate brownies though! (all natural ingredients and paleo approved!)
I am also human and succumb to weakness every now and again, take for example last night, I was at my brothers wedding and there was this awesome looking chocolate mud cake (wedding cake), there were a few slices on a platter sitting on the table, I couldn’t just leave it there could I???
IT WAS AWESOME!! however the blood sugar rush later wasn’t 😦 but hey these things happen sometimes…
